Cooper was only mildly concerned that Michaela seemed unusually quiet. They’d watched fireworks together, choreographed to patriotic music exploding in one of the city parks that had marked the end of July Fourth. She was probably tired, he reasoned as he navigated the motorcycle through traffic and back into central Memphis. Too much sun, too many sweet teas during the day to keep cool, too much stimulus. It had been a long day. But beyond what he’d planned for the two of them, not the least of which had been her private talk with ET that she had not shared with him, had been the surprising comments and observations of two people whose opinion he respected. The first was Reverend Wallace. The second was Miss Faye.

Rupert Wallace had been more than just a local contact when he’d first come to Memphis, Cooper knew. Reverend Wallace and his family had welcomed him and embraced him, asking no questions about his past, but showing infinite interest and concern about his future. Cooper would forever be grateful for the reverend’s guidance, patience, but most of all his wisdom and blessings. It had been Reverend Wallace, and he alone, who had been able to perfectly read his motivations and fears about starting over here, and to temper and redirect his need to prove himself. Cooper could never forget how desperate he’d been for forgiveness back then.

With great humor and understanding, the good reverend had also reminded him not to neglect his own heart. That his physical and emotional needs were every bit as important as his devotion and love of God, and the caring of his soul. The two were not mutually exclusive.

So it was humbling when Reverend Wallace said to him, shaking his hand as he and Michaela were about to leave the church festivities, that he approved.

Cooper knew exactly what the reverend was talking about.

Earlier that morning, about to leave Miss Faye’s café, he’d stood at the counter chatting with the proprietress while Michaela was drawn into conversation with Pete, the local vagrant who she found to be sweet and interesting.

“She ain’t from Memphis.” Miss Faye had shaken her head.

“Something wrong with that?”

“No, sir. I ain’t gonna hold that against her. I like her. She’s friendly and don’t have an attitude, if you know what I’m talking about.”

“I do.” Cooper nodded.

“She look real good beside you, Smith.”

He’d stared at her with a frown. “It’s not like I bring women here all the time.”

She cackled. “Lord, chile’, don’t I know it. That’s what I’m sayin’. She look like she belong…”

His consideration made him pensive, as he and Michaela headed back into Memphis.

At the next red light, Cooper took the moment to cover Michaela’s arm with his hand, where she had hers wrapped around him. The touch was not only to reassure her, but himself as well. It was a spontaneous demonstration of affection. His comfort level with her was growing exponentially as was his sense of urgency, of hurry. Everything in his life recently had been thrown into fast forward with accelerated actions and stampeding emotions.
